Veteran independent lingerie retailer to close after 30 years

An Oldham-based independent lingerie retailer which has been operating for 30 years has announced it will close.

Frillys, a specialist lingerie and swimwear fitting shop on Lord Street, plans to close its doors either later this month or in early February.

Owners Julie Ashworth and Annette Simpson, who took over the business more than 15 years ago, attributed the closure to a mix of personal and business reasons.

Speaking to Oldham News, Simpson noted that changing buying trends and a changing town centre have played a part in the decisions.

She told the newspaper: “Online has taken over and many are happy to buy without being fitted.”

Simpson added that it was a tough decision as it would be “disappointing loyal customers”. “Since we put the posters up saying we are closing down we’ve had so many people in saying how upset they are,” Simpson said.

She concluded: “There aren’t many independent retail businesses who’ve survived through the recession, especially in Oldham, there’s only a handful really, so we are very sad to be going.”

The independent retailer has catered for multiple family generations and as a niche fitting shop, has served both younger girls and older women during its time of operation.
