De Montfort University (DMU) student Sian Whitefoot has been announced the winner of the Triumph Inspiration Award UK with her design, Ecliptic Renewal.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Triumph Inspiration Award contest saw 16 fashion student finalists, eight from the London College of Fashion and eight from De Monfort University in Leicester go head to head by designing a ‘catwalk showpiece’ to represent the design theme ‘Dragons and Butterflies’ with an underlying “East meets West” concept.
Judges of the event, which took place in Circus, London, included Poppy Delevingne, leading German design duo Felder Felder and the British Fashion Council’s Caroline Rush. The evening was hosted Jade Parfitt.
The panellists were asked to score the designs based on strict criteria including innovation and creativity, individuality, concept, aesthetic, quality, presentation and show effect. The UK winner, Whitefoot, will go forward to represent the UK with 31 other international finalists at the climax of the global design competition, taking place in Shanghai.
On winning, Whitefoot told Lingerie Insight: “I am just so shocked, I can’t believe it. It’s such a good experience. I won the popular competition, but I thought it was just my mum getting people to vote.”
DMU course leader Gillian Proctor added: “This is the third competition Sian has won, this year. We are very proud. We are thrilled. This is such a great competition and it is such an honour for DMU in the 65th year of the course.”
The overall winner of the global TIA wins a prize fund of Euros 15,000 with the 2nd and 3rd places winning Euros 10,000 and Euros 5,000 respectively.
Last year’s global winning design, ‘Les Fleurs du Mal’ from Hungary, will go on sale in November as a limited-edition item at selected Triumph and other retail stores worldwide. They will also have the career-boosting opportunity to work alongside Triumph’s design team and see their design interpreted into a commercial garment and sold as a limited edition piece in Triumph’s stores and selected outlets worldwide in 2013.
