Supermarket Sainsbury’s has revealed that it experienced its best ever Christmas in 2010 with lingerie sales up 45 percent.
Better than expected third quarter sales helped contribute towards the performance, which showed a growing market share and a record number of customers, despite the snow.
Over 24.5m customers entered the store in the seven day lead up to Christmas. Non-food sales grew three times quicker than the food business and were led by lingerie and clothing accessories, which were up 45 percent on the previous year.
Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King said: “The business continues to perform well in a challenging consumer environment, as customers are faced with fuel and VAT increases, combined with uncertain employment prospects.
“Our universal customer appeal together with our accelerated growth plans means we are well placed to make continued good progress in 2011."
