Retailer confidence reaches record high

Confidence is among independent retailers is as its highest level since 2008, the British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) has revealed.

It said seven in 10 retailers are now feeling confident or very confident in the trading year ahead of them, the after a second quarter of overall recovery – and that despite widespread flooding.

Some 56% of bira members taking part in the quarterly sales monitor for the first three months of 2014, reported higher sales than in the same period in 2013.

As a result the bira Confidence Index floated up from 63% in the fourth quarter of 2013 to 70% in the period March to January this year.

Independent department stores, clothing and footwear, gift shops and garden suppliers all reported growth.
