In 2016, Cindy Liberman and Faith Leeves teamed up to start Lara Intimates, a sustainable underwear brand, while they were studying Fashion Contour at London College of Fashion.
During that time, they developed their debut collection of bras, briefs and bodies using reclaimed fabrics, un-used or mis-dyed by large factories operating in the UK, with the aim of launching their brand on the market after graduating.
In March 2017, the partners were awarded £5,000 in funding to accelerate their business after fending off competition from 80 other students to win the Gold prize at the Student Enterprise Team (SET) Challenge finale.
SET is a global start-up awards programme for schools, with up to $50,000 (£40,100) in prizes available for the most entrepreneurial schools, teachers and students.
The partners also ran a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in May, receiving £22,850 from 203 investors.
This enabled the entrepreneurs to pay for specialist machinery, production assistants, fabrics and a studio space in East London.
Cindy and Faith handed in their debut collection as their final project in the summer of 2017, and in September they achieved their dream of launching their brand on the market.
Lara Intimates’ ecommerce store is now up and running and the brand hosted a pop-up shop in December 2017, introducing the brand to consumers and offering free fittings.
The brand’s aim is to develop intimate apparel that fits and flatters, provide opportunities to female makers in London and empower all women who believe in a sustainable fashion future.
