POWER LIST 2018: Brand Champions – Jenna Barnes, designer and founder, Raine & Bea

Jenna Barnes has had the sewing bug for as long as she can remember. At the age of eight, she would cut up her mum’s old clothes and make headbands and hair bobbles on her industrial sewing machine.

A born entrepreneur, she’d sell the accessories to her school friends and earn spends for the holidays.
Jenna went on to become a machinist after leaving school, sewing everything from karate suits to travel cots for British Airways.

In 2005, after her first daughter was born, she worked part-time at Rags to Bitches in Manchester’s Northern Quarter where she was asked to alter costumes at Celine Dion’s Taking Chances concert at Manchester Arena.

She then went on to become a seamstress for Shop Direct in 2012, but was determined to set up her own business.
In 2013, Jenna she did just that, establishing Raine & Bea, a Lancashire-based fashion brand that combines theatrical flair with time honoured manufacturing techniques.

Jenna runs the business almost single handedly, creating couture pieces and limited-edition lingerie using fine
silks, satins and specially sourced ostrich feathers and Swarovski crystals.

Over the last four years, she has focused on creating garments she loves, not what industry trends dictate, and worked hard to build brand awareness through celebrity endorsement and producing theatrical pieces for TV
and stage.

In 2013, she made 40 made-to-measure costumes for West End musical Cabaret, starring Will Young. And when the show started its UK tour in 2017, she was welcomed back to dress the cast.

Raine & Bea designs have been seen on London taxis, underground stations and even celebrities including Alicia Dixon and Victoria Beckham.

And after four years of building brand awareness in this way, the label has caught the attention of investors who have plunged £1 million into the company to launch a diffusion line.

The new collection, set to launch in 2018, will pay homage to the brand’s luxury aesthetic whilst allowing access to a wider audience through a more affordable price point.
