POWER LIST 2017: Retail Stars – Marjorie Thompson, managing director, Chantilly

Chantilly was launched in Rochdale by Marjorie Thompson 32 years ago. Since then, she has strived to give her customers an outstanding fitting service and offer quality branded goods from Marie Jo to Anita.

In 2008, Chantilly moved to a larger premises with a purpose-built store layout, improved changing room facilities and a modern office.

The retailer’s main challenge has been to thrive in Rochdale, one of the most deprived towns in the UK. But, over the last few years, the town has received £250 million of inward investment.

Chantilly is now one of just a handful of lingerie shops in the Greater Manchester area that offers a professional lingerie fitting service.

The store stocks European and US brands that have been carefully selected for their quality and comfortable fit. It also specialises in large-cup and mastectomy fittings, having received the Anita Care Centre of Excellence Award in 2010.

In 2011, Chantilly launched its online business, which doubled the team’s workload but enabled Thompson to invest in a fully integrated stock control system that has made the business operate much more efficiently.

The store’s customer engagement has extended to a third generation in many cases, with grandmothers, mums and daughters visiting the store from all over the North West and beyond.
