Gillian Proctor is the programme leader for De Montfort University’s world-renowned Contour Fashion course.
Since joining the course in August 2008, she has been responsible for driving forward innovation and nurturing the future of the intimate apparel industry – and she’s certainly lived up to this role.
She not only inspires and supports the next generation of lingerie designers, but promotes the rich history of the craft through her work as an author, an industry consultant for television and the chair of the International Institute of Intimate Apparel.
Proctor is a internationally-recognised expert in her field and her strong links in the lingerie sector have been built on a career working with huge fashion names, such as Karl Lagerfield and Armani.
As a result, students and graduates have gone on to secure placements and employment with some of the world’s biggest design names, including Abercrombie & Fitch, H&M, Agent Provocateur, Gap and Tommy Hilfiger.
The Contour Fashion course will mark its 70th anniversary this year with celebratory drinks at the Mode City trade show in Paris and a special exhibition that will chart the history of Contour Fashion and lingerie making in Leicester.
The exhibition will be held in conjunction with Market Harborough-based corset maker R & WH Symington and will tour the country in summer 2018.
Elissa Grainger, an emerging lingerie designer who was crowned Rising Star of the Year in the 2016 UK Lingerie Awards, will also exhibit her portfolio of work in a new gallery space at DMU.
The Contour Fashion graduate will showcase her designs in the glass-fronted gallery located at the base of the Arts Tower in the Vijay Patel building, the cutting-edge new home to the university’s art and design courses.
