Marks & Spencer has pledged its support for the first cotton mill to open in the UK in more than 30 years.
The retailer is said to be one of the first customers of English Fine Cottons, which will operate from Dukinfield, a small town east of Manchester.
English Fine Cottons has restored Tower Mill, a cotton mill that was built in 1853 and stopped spinning a century later.
The £5.8m project is expected to create 120 jobs over the next 18 months.
English Fine Cottons said its mission was to bring cotton spinning back to its ‘spiritual home’ in the North West of England after several years in the making.
It aims to produce both yarns and fabrics in various states of finish, as a bespoke service for customers ordering in larger quantities and, eventually, for smaller labels and business start-ups.
