A mannequin with protruding ribs has been removed from La Perla’s New York boutique after it caused a Twitter storm among customers yesterday.
A man named Michael Rudoy first drew attention to the offending mannequin when he tweeted “How does #LaPerla think ribs on a mannequin is ok?!”
The tweet was accompanied by a photo of the mannequin dressed in red lingerie.
The photo quickly went viral and other outraged Twitter users, united under the hashtag #notbuyingit, labelled the stick-thin dummy “disturbing”, “tasteless” and “unacceptable” .
La Perla responded within hours, tweeting that the mannequin in question had been removed and won’t be displayed again in any of its stores.
The statement read: “We have an update on this issue: The mannequin photographed has been removed from the store and will not be used again by any La Perla boutique. We are in the process of redesigning all La Perla stores with a new concept image and the mannequins that are currently displayed in our US stores will no longer be used. We appreciate and value everyone’s comments, thank you for bringing this to our attention.”
