Kinky Wimbledon knickers launched by Mary Portas

Kinky Knickers, the made-in-Britain lingerie line launched by Mary Portas, will release a line of Wimbledon-inspired knickers in June to coincide with the tennis tournament.

Although the line is not affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association’s famous tournament, the three different designs reflect traditional aspects of Wimbledon tennis, with a pair in purple and green, the Wimbledon colours; pink and cream to reflect the traditional Wimbledon strawberries and cream; and all-white mesh with ruffles, a reminder of the Gussie Moran’s lace briefs, which shocked Wimbledon in 1949.

"They’re definitely not designed to play tennis in," said David Moore, managing director of the manufacturer Headen & Quarmby, made famous in Channel 4’s series Mary’s Bottom Line. "They’re more about tongue-in-cheek fun around the tennis theme."

Retailing at £15 a pair, the knickers feature the phrase "Anyone for tennis?", the Kinky Knickers pin-up girl logo, and are a limited run of 5,000 pairs.

"They’re being stocked in Liberty, John Lewis and Morley Group – they have Ely’s of Wimbledon, so they were very keen to take them – and there are a lot of independents who are clamouring to have them," said Moore. "They’ll be going out to retailers at the beginning of June."
