John Lewis has announced its biggest ever trading week with sales of £121 million, eight percent higher than its previous all-time record.
The department store saw an increase in sales of 16.7 percent for the seven days ending December 11. Though the previous week saw trading affected by heavy snow, sales were still up by 10 percent on the same period in 2009.
John Lewis director of selling operations David Barford said: “We are thrilled to have exceeded our record week from last year, and by such a margin. The thaw in the weather has no doubt helped, and shoppers have been out in force throughout the week.”
The best selling items at John Lewis last week included lingerie, jewellery, beauty products, toys, coffee machines, iPads and handbags.
Barford added: “Even in areas where snow has persisted we have seen the determination of our customers to deliver a perfect Christmas for their friends and family, whether that is selecting presents or decorating the home.
“The atmosphere in our branches is very festive as Partners pull out all the stops to deliver the levels of service our customers rightly expect from us.”
