Born in New York City, Morgan Lane is the third generation in a family of fashion. Inspired by her mother, renowned designer Jill Stuart, she set off on a similar path. Lane realised her passion for lingerie and illustration, and her first collection tells a story through both mediums.
Lingerie Insight: How long did it take to set up Morgan Lane?
Morgan Lane: It is something I have been dreaming about my whole life. I had so many ideas, the most difficult part was picking one direction. Once I did, it took about a year of hard work.
LI: How would you describe your first collection?
ML: My first collection really reflects my personal style. It makes the statement that sexy can be achieved in a playful and adorable way. Lanie, my signature doll illustration and brand muse, represents this idea and is included in embroideries and lace on many of the garments.
LI: Who are your target customers?
ML: Women who treasure their lingerie as works of art and look for something they can feel special in.
LI: What inspires you when designing?
ML: I start with a concept that can be carried out in all different ways throughout the collection. My first collection for Spring 2014 was inspired by flowers of the night; which became my color palette (vanilla, noir, lipstick, rose). I used a lot of floral appliqués and floral prints on mesh in midnight and fuscia. For my Fall 2014 collection, you will see a theme of stars, demonstrated through pale yellows, gold glitter, and lotus flower appliqués.
LI: What sets you apart from other brands?
ML: You will see lots of fabric development and new modern techniques that aren’t usually used in lingerie. I also use my drawings to create the fabrics, embroideries and prints. I love mixing something really classic and luxurious, like charmeuse, with something modern and techno, like stretch power net. All of my hardware and closures are custom designed by me as well.
