Student designer Emma Walters from DeMontfort University was named the UK winner of the Triumph Inspiration Award, last night, for her design Liberation.
The ceremony, hosted by showgirl Immodesty Blaize, saw Chloe King of Leicester take second place with her design The Silhouette of Ascendancy and Basma Masri of Surrey and Pim Bencharit of Leicester came in joint third place, with designs Tribal Heritage and Soft Cage.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Triumph Inspiration Award contest saw 20 fashion student finalists, 10 from the London College of Fashion and 10 from De Monfort University in Leicester go head to head by designing a ‘catwalk showpiece’ to represent the design theme ‘125 Years of Celebrating Women’.
Judges Jameela Jamil, Charlotte Stockdale, Angela Buttolph, leading German design duo Felder Felder and Triumph UK’s Product Manager Jane Fenlon-Smith, had the task of selecting the winner and two runners up. The panellists were asked to score the designs based on strict criteria including innovation and creativity, individuality, concept, aesthetic, quality, presentation and show effect.
Walters will go forward with her winning design, Liberation, to represent the UK with 36 other international finalists at the climax to the global design competition. The global Triumph Inspiration Award finals and Triumph’s 125th anniversary celebrations will take place in Berlin, this July, where their designs will be judged by an internationally renowned jury.
The overall winner of the global TIA wins a prize fund of Euros 15,000 with the 2nd and 3rd places winning Euros 10,000 and Euros 5,000 respectively. They will also have the career-boosting opportunity to work alongside Triumph’s design team in Hong Kong and see their design interpreted into a commercial garment and sold as a limited edition piece in Triumph’s stores and selected outlets worldwide in 2012.
Last year’s global winning design, ‘Morphology’ by Nikolay Bojilov of Bulgaria, will go on sale in the summer as a limited-edition item at selected Triumph and other retail stores worldwide.
