BUYERS’ GUIDE: Lingerie and hosiery trends to expect in AW17

As part of a special report on future lingerie and hosiery trends, top industry buyers make their predictions for AW17 and reveal the brands to watch in 2017.

Here’s their guide on what to expect from industry trade shows in the New Year.

Claudia Walker
Branded buyer for lingerie and hosiery, House of Fraser

Trend predictions: For AW17 I think we’ll continue to see more and more people become more adventurous with their lingerie and try more sexy styles. The release of the next instalment of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy is likely to spur the consumer demand for more risqué styles.

Brands to watch: The new Elle MacPherson Body label and the already well-established Calvin Klein brand would be my brands to watch for 2017.

Jenni Burt
Head of buying, Figleaves

Trend predictions: It’s all about texture for AW17 – velvets, satin, sheer and luxe noble yarns like cashmere and silk.  Nightwear and loungewear will sit seamlessly alongside lingerie.

Brands to watch: For us, L’Agent always continues to surprise and wow. Another brand we are really excited about is the re-launch of Dita Von Teese – a great way to kick off the New Year.

Dawn Barber
Managing director, UK Tights and UK Lingerie

Trend predictions: For hosiery, we will make a return to punk style: large fishnets, cut outs, bright colours, jazzy patterns, etc. Fashion socks are hot, too, and both tights and socks will be worn all year round, even with sandals. At the same time, activewear has influenced hosiery, so we are going to see more comfortable legwear, with leg support and additional features. Bondage-inspired lingerie is meant to be trendy next season with the release of Fifty Shades Darker. At the same time, bralettes and sports bras will be hot in the AW17 season.

Brands to watch: We will be bringing ITEM M6 into our store in the coming weeks and we anticipate that this will do very well with our customers. In lingerie, we will be bringing new brands from Europe into UK Lingerie as we have recently visited Latvia and have found high quality goods that are great value for money.

Lucy Litwack
Managing director, Coco de Mer

Trend predictions: Underwear as outerwear will continue to be a big trend, with a lot of day-to-night dressing. I expect to see dark, wintery florals in intense colours, lots of inspiration from nature and dazzling metallics.

Brands to watch: Coco de Mer of course!

Laura Martino
Product director, Bravissimo

Trend predictions: Bralettes will continue to be on trend, along with non-padded bras. We also expect more brands to launch a range of skin tones and, of course, sportswear will continue to do well.

Brands to watch: I could list several brands that I think will make an impact next year as each one is doing something exciting, so we will have to wait and see, but we have lots planned with our own label Bravissimo, so I suppose I should say us!

Gemma Pestel
Senior merchandising manager, Lovehoney

Trend predictions: We’re expecting real emphasis on rich, dark colours and textures in more traditional, sophisticated styles for AW17. We’ve already seen some of this coming through with our Seduce Me collection and Lovehoney Lingerie’s first ever print, Midnight Bloom, which comes in a gorgeous robe and babydoll.

Brands to watch: I’m really excited to see what Coco de Mer is doing, especially with its Fifty Shades  Darker lingerie collection, which is offered at more affordable price points.
