Double degree student Julia McLean has been crowned the first Australian Star in a Bra winner and will be flown to the UK in November to take place in the Autumn/Winter 2012 shoot with D plus specialists Curvy Kate.
McLean and her 30FF bust will represent Australia in Curvy Kate’s worldwide modelling and advertising campaign, joining previous UK Star in Bra winners.
Fighting it out against 20 other curvy Australians, McLean, 19, was whittled down from over 200 applicants.
She said: “I think through this competition I’ve learned to put myself out there and challenge myself. I’ve taken this opportunity as a chance to really feel confident and good about myself.”
To promote the search, Curvy Kate teamed up with Australian weekly real-life magazine Take 5, who put the call out to their 800,000+ readers, looking for a ‘true Aussie with gorgeous, natural D plus curves’ to represent the brand.
The search was run through the Curvy Kate Australia Facebook site with the entry and voting stages all contained within a custom made application.
Curvy Kate reported overwhelming support for the competition through social media, with the public logging over 2138 votes in the final stages. The brand’s Facebook site also saw over 2200 fans joining the group since the voting began.
Curvy Kate marketing manager Hannah Houston said: “This is our 4th Star in a Bra search and the first ever search which has taken place in the southern hemisphere. The feedback has been amazing and has helped spread Curvy Kate’s philosophies worldwide. Although the competition is currently only run in two out of 15 distribution countries, we have seen people from all over the world voting on the finalists.”
She added: ‘Apart from finding some fantastic models, we’ve also proved that there is room in the modelling world for a variety of shapes and sizes. We want our customers to celebrate their curves and relate to the models they are seeing in our advertising campaigns.’
Curvy Kate plans to continue with the model searches next year. The UK competition is set to kick off in the UK in February 2012.
