Bridget Jones shapes the nation’s style as Spanx sales soar at John Lewis

The arrival of Bridget Jones’ Baby in UK cinemas this Autumn has triggered a huge rise in shapewear sales at John Lewis.

As the third film in the franchise premiered in September, sales of Spanx underwear rocketed 71%, the department store revealed in its fourth annual Retail Report.

Waist and thigh slimming pants were first made famous by Renée Zellweger when she played Bridget Jones in the original film, Bridget Jones’ Diary, 15 years ago.

But Bridget wasn’t the only famous face to shape the nation’s style this year – Ab Fab’s Patsy and Edina drove an 80% rise in kaftan sales when their movie hit cinemas in July.

John Lewis’s how we shop, live & look retail report also revealed that lacy lingerie was the preferred choice of gift for Valentine’s Day 2016.

Red bras and black lace chemises were particularly popular this year, with year-on-year sales soaring 46% and 190% respectively.

Other popular products that defined the year were the white trainer, the avocado, the designer light bulb and the pink flamingo.
