Bopeeps launches Nottingham lace collection

Bopeeps has launched a new collections, titled Frilly, that is made entirely of Nottingham lace.

Frilly, which is handmade in London, is a modern take on the traditional bloomer. Ruching on the waist forms a ‘flattering and slimming’ line, while overlapping lace flutters cascade down the garment for a ‘romantic looking’ bottom.

“The Frilly is a limited edition garment that we made in London,” said Bopeeps co-founder Bo Macdonald. “We used lace from Nottingham, as we wanted a Made in GB garment. The people we met in Nottingham were wonderful. The person who stands out in memory is Jonathan, from Douglas Gill. We called him Professor Indiana Jones.

"He was so knowledgeable about the history of lace mills in Nottingham and educated us on the demise of the industry being lost to the Far East. Sadly, this company is no longer in business."

Because of the stretch lace and ample cut – one size fits many. However, for the brand’s curvier customers, Bopeep has introduced the bloomers into its BoDacious (plus size) collection.

Macdonald added: “The ‘Made in London’ Frilly took a year to make and taught me everything it means to be Made in England. Two production houses in the UK passed on the job because it was so complicated to make! After months of meeting the last remaining lace merchants from Nottingham to London, pattern cutters and what’s left of the machinists, I finally convinced one of the talented women who had originally passed to work with us. When speaking to my business partner, I refer to her as Aunt Lucy.

"During the making of the Frilly, I was trying to get a better deal per yard on lace trimmings, so I agreed to moonwalk across the floor for 10 pence off every meter. He went for it! It must be said, I am an incredible moonwalker. I now moonwalk regularly.”

Frilly is available at, for £125, and Dolci Follie in Notting Hill, London.

Bopeeps will also be launching new range Butterfly for the AW12 season. Butterfly encompasses a bralette, knickers and wide band thong. The bralette features a sweetheart neckline with scalloped edges along the décolletage and ruching between the cups. Lace detailed straps provide the final touch.

The matching knickers are cut in a half cheek style that gives the illusion of a full knicker in the front, but without the visible panty lines in the back.

The set is available in white, black, nude and charcoal grey. It retails at £40 on
