Award-winning lingerie retailer to close its doors after 70 years

An award-winning lingerie retailer in Carlisle has announced its plans to close the business after 70 years of trading.

Turnbulls, which is run by sisters Sheila Wykes and Alison Johnston, has issued a statement to The Cumberland News explaining that it plans to close in mid-February due to “ongoing problems beyond their control.”

Separately the retailer has posted a notice on its website to inform customers of its upcoming closure, stating: “We have had a terrible year with water coming through the ceiling and we are a self-contained ground floor unit!

“We feel we simply have no choice, but to leave this unit, but will continue trading here as usual, with our final day of business being 17 February 2018.

The owners went on to explain they would “possibly consider” reopening the business in another location but did not give any details.

Wykes and Johnston added: “A well-earned break is on the cards for the wonderful staff who have gone above and beyond for their customers over the years.”

The store, which first opened its doors in 1947, offers a variety of luxury swimwear, nightwear and lingerie brands that cater for all ages, as well as bra fitting appointments.
